RESEARCH 1960s

PART OF THE BRIEF STATES THAT THE OUTFIT I AM TO DESIGN MUST BE INSPIRED PRIMARILY BY A DECADE OF HISTORY. AS I HAVE CHOSEN THE 1960s, I WILL LOOK INTO RESEARCHING DESIGNERS AND FASHION OF THIS ERA, AND WILL ALSO BE CONSIDERING ART MOVEMENTS AND HISTORICAL FACTORS WHICH MAY HAVE AFFECTED THE FASHION OF THE TIME.

MOOD BOARD:

Before starting my research I produced a mood board to summarise the 1960s era. The board includes all aspects of the 60s. I will use this mood board to narrow down some areas in which I will do some more research.

ARTISTS:

I decided to do some further research into artists of the era. From this I can get some ideas for colour palette, and possible silhouettes.

ANDY WARHOL:
Probably the most famous artist of the 'Pop Art' movement, Andy Warhol was known for his brightly coloured, repetitive images.

ROY LICHTENSTEIN:
Most famous for his comic style art. His work is somewhat satirical, but is still appreciated in the 'Pop Art' movement.

1960s DESIGNERS:

By looking at designers of the era, I can get ideas for fashion details and silhouettes. Also by looking at 1960s fashion I can gain ideas which will allow me to take this era to the 21st century.

 PACO RABANNE:
A jewellery designer by trade, Paco Rabanne made the transition to womenswear in the 60s, creating 'space-race' style garments in metallic materials.

YVES SAINT LAURENT:
The 'Mondrian' collection by YSL in the 60s was very influential. The block colours were actually created by sewing different coloured fabrics together in interesting seamlines.

JEAN MUIR:
Jean Muir was a high end designer who transitioned into mass market fashion. She transformed her contemporary ideas into well fitted jersey dresses that were flattering on many different body shapes.

BALENCIAGA:
I am very inspired by Balenciaga from this decade. The evening wear in particular is very contemporary and sophisticated. The silhouettes from this era are very unique, as they include both loose and more fitted garments, yet the styles in the collection are cohesive.

PIERRE CARDIN:
Pierre Cardin produced a lot of futuristic garments, all with very intricate seamlines and weird silhouettes. He is interesting to look at as he works a lot with geometric shapes, this is something I can consider in terms of contemporary design.
