DAVID NIEPER LIVE PROJECT: CONTEMPORARY RESEARCH

CONTEMPORARY RESEARCH

AS I AM TRYING TO BRING THE DAVID NIEPER BRAND TO THE 50+ MARKET, I WILL NEED TO RESEARCH BRANDS THAT ALREADY DO THIS. I WILL ALSO BE LOOKING AT MODERN METHODS OF PATTERN CUTTING, TO ENABLE ME TO GATHER INSPIRATION FOR TECHNIQUES AND FASHION DETAILS.

COS:

Cos is a modern and very minimalistic brand. They offer many classic pieces with interesting contemporary twists. In terms of what they offer for the 50+ market, they have a wide range of high quality cotton garments including tailored white shirts and simple dresses. Looking at the website, they tend to cater towards a more formal style as oppose to casual wear, however this is most likely what the stylish 50+ woman would wear.

COS Cotton Poplin and Jersey Shirt- £55

From looking at what pieces COS has to offer, I am particularly inspired by the interesting seam lines. On white shirts especially, you can see these kind of details more easily, and they make for a more unique design.

Wide waist pleated Trousers- £69

Cos sticks to simple more neutral colour schemes and tends to focus on intricate design details. The garments look to be cut well and create a specific silhouette which I would say is flattering for the 50+ market.

Layered mid-length Dress- £79

OSKA:

Oska is another high end brand which I have been researching to give me inspiration for design. Their style is more layered and they have garments which reflect certain silhouettes as chosen by OSKA.

Silhouettes drawn by the OSKA design team

Oska is a European brand based in Munich. They pride themselves on using high quality organic (where possible) fabrics, and focus on sustainability. The silhouettes from OSKA include the 'A-Shape', 'Box- Shape', 'H-Shape', 'O-Shape' and 'V-Shape'.

Modern layered looks from OSKA with a more loose silhouette.

OSKA as a brand works in small teams to perfect their look. The advantage of this is that communication between the teams is effective. David Nieper is similar in this way, as the company is based in Alfreton where all the teams work together on the same premises.

OSKA has a section on their website where you can search for garments based on colour.

JAPANESE PATTERN CUTTING:

As well as looking at contemporary brands, I have done some research into Japanese style pattern cutting.  This style of pattern cutting involves creating interesting seam lines/changing the positions of seams to create an interesting design.

PATTERN MAGIC: TOMOKO NAKAMICHI
Pattern Magic by Tomoko Nakamichi is a series of books which demonstrate how to create weird and creative garments with intricate details. The patterns although they look simple, appear very sophisticated when completed and have a great visual effect.
